Inflammation is produced by the body in response to an injury. Inflammation are "repair chemicals that are released into the area in response to tissue damage. This biological reaction is meant to decrease mobility so that the area that has been injured can rest and heal; however, the chemicals that promote healing could also cause pain and cause unwanted inflammation." (1) Unwanted inflammation could limit an injury from healing faster.
The addition of Omega-3s into your diet can reduce inflammation and support the entirety of your health, especially after injuries that have been caused from a motor vehicle accident, work related accident, or a sports injury. (3)
"Omega-3’s are a fat source mainly found in plant-based foods and fatty fish. Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial because of their 'anti-inflammatory properties. They help maintain cell health and protect these cells against damage, and can promote brain and heart health; among other effects." (3)
Some sources are chia seeds, flax seeds and flax oil, walnuts, spinach, soybeans, tofu, wild rice, fatty fish (salmon, sardines, tuna), and grassfed beef. Incorporating some of these foods could decrease healing time and inflammation after an injury. (3)(5)(6)
Getting appropriate care is essential in recovering from injuries. The addition of proper nutrition and the addition of Omega-3s to promote an anti-inflammatory diet to allow the body to heal is very important.
